Wondering what you missed on the Mineral Rights podcast in 2020? Here are Matt and Justin’s picks for the most impactful podcast episodes of 2020.
This is the final episode for 2020 for the Mineral Rights Podcast, which is really exciting. I can’t believe 2020 is almost over, and it is probably not soon enough for many. It has no doubt been a challenging year with the coronavirus pandemic, economic collapse, and crude oil futures going negative for the first time ever.
Thankfully, things are looking up for 2021 with the first doses of covid-19 vaccine being distributed and this helping sustain the economic recovery and the recovery in the price of oil and natural gas, and hopefully our royalty checks as well.
Despite these challenges, we’ve had some amazing guests and covered some high-impact topics this year and so we are going to share a few clips from some of our favorite and most useful episodes of this year.
This may be a great reminder for those of you who have listened to them and they may be a teaser for those of you who want to go back and listen to the entire episodes that we’re going to talk about.
If you listen to any episodes from 2020, these are a great place to start. This shortlist of 5 episodes has something for everyone. They cover everything form how large mineral buyers approach mineral rights acquisitions, strategies for leasing or selling your minerals, how to get access to free oil and gas well information, to how oil and gas prices work.

- The Moral Case for Fossil Fuels (Penguin, 2014), a New York Times bestseller arguing that if we look at the whole picture, human flourishing requires that humanity use more fossil fuels not less. (WSJ review here.) The book has been widely praised as the most persuasive argument ever made for our continuing use of fossil fuels, winning Epstein the “Most Original Thinker of 2014” award from The McLaughlin Group.
- Alex created the website EnergyTalkingPoints.com to provide true, powerful, and succinct talking points on this year’s most important energy, environmental, and climate issues.

- Learn what you get with the free WellDatabase Lite Plan. Matt uses WellDatabase in his consulting practice and in all aspects of Silverheels Investments LLC when powerful oil & gas mapping and analytics, data management, and organizing and sharing data is required. Plus, WellDatabase does all of this at a fraction of the cost of their competitors. In 2020, they created a Free Lite plan for users who simply need well level data (great for individual mineral owners who have an interest in only a few wells). If you do decide to sign up for a free or a paid plan, enter “Mineral Rights Podcast” in the “Where did you hear about WellDatabase” section.
- Goldman Sachs equity research analysts led by Brian Singer said “We estimate if our covered producers invest on the basis of $30-$45/bbl WTI over the next five quarters, we will see more than 1 BCF/d net less US gas production”.
- Download the free paper on Negative Prices & Royalty Calculations that Spencer mentions in Episode 53. (This was part of a presentation given to the State Bar of Texas that Burns Charest, LLP has made available for you to download here)
