I can’t believe we are already at Episode # 200! Thanks for your support over the past 5+ years. To celebrate, I wanted to focus on you, the listener, with a slightly different type of listener question episode. In this episode, we answer listener questions focused on investing in mineral rights & royalties that were submitted via email by Ken, Mike, Garrett, Sam, and Sean.

I have been getting a lot of calls and emails recently from listeners wanting to learn more about investing in minerals so I figured this would be a good time to cover some of the common questions. With high inflation and uncertainty in the stock market, many investors are shifting gears towards real property like mineral rights and royalties.

My mineral management basics course will address many of the fundamentals around the different types of mineral and leasehold interests, how to read a legal description, and how to identify properties with nearby oil and gas activity. Be sure to sign up to be on the wait list to be notified when it launches later this year! In the meantime, if you would like 1-on-1 coaching, you can send me an email at feedback@mineralrightspodcast.com

The question submitted by Garrett asked about a free service for tracking taxes and royalty checks. Which brings me to the sponsor for this episode:

MineraliQ is a free online platform for mineral owners which will automatically connect to your well data – helping to track all your royalty check payments and portfolio value.  Discover what your minerals are worth in real-time, view royalty payments, track income trends, and know the exact location of your properties using their interactive map.  Activate your free account today by clicking the link here: MineraliQ.com

Thanks again to everyone who left a review or who submitted a listener question!  If you have a question about your minerals or royalties, you can send it to feedback@mineralrightspodcast.com and who knows we might just answer it on the air!

If this has been helpful, please take a moment and leave us an honest rating & review on Apple Podcasts.  This feedback really helps keep us going and helps make sure that we are putting out content that is tailored to your needs.

Mineral Rights Investing Questions

Hi

I just came across your podcast.  I thought I’d reach out because I’ve been approached with a mineral rights offering and I want to know what your thoughts are regarding starting into the mineral rights investing space.  Is it something that a new investor should consider or maybe look at other options due to green energy movement?

Thanks

Ken

Question #2

I am a private investor. I recently bought 60 acres of mineral rights in Dawson county right next to where EOG is drilling. I don’t know if it was a good deal or not but I think it was. my #1 need is to be able to find good deals and to recognize what a good deal is.

Mike

Question #3

Matt,

I’m buying small mineral interests. I’m looking for a spreadsheet or free service to keep track of taxes, paychecks, etc.

Any ideas? Thanks so much for all you do.

Garrett

Question #4

Hi Matts,

Please correct me if I mistyped your name! I’ve been listened to your podcast from last week and I couldn’t stop listening from one episode to another. You and your co-host, Justin? You guys did a great job making me not feel alone by investing in mineral rights.

I invested in a small amount of well bore interests in west Texas in 2015 and it turned out to be not too profitable ….I didn’t even know what I did wrong to cause such an outcome. Anyways, after the pandemic, I decided to move this investment further. I don’t know when we can have some corporations though. I’ll listen to your podcast further and along the way, I may have a better understanding of the business so that we can have some on the same page discussion.

I live in Beijing, China. There are 13 hours time difference between us. Thank y’all!

Question #5

Hey Matt,

I am interested in learning more about investing in mineral rights. I inherited 20% ownership of royalties from gas wells on our family ranch on the border of Utah and Wyoming. I would like to learn more about what I own and as I get a better understanding of mineral rights I want expand and buy more royalties.

Thanks,

Sam

Question #6

Hello,

I just stumbled upon your podcast and have made my way through a couple of episodes. I appreciate the thoughtful content. I know they are a bit off topic, but I especially liked the nuclear energy investment ideas. Given the current geopolitical climate, this seem promising and is a nice alternative to oil and gas which is a bit of a crowded trade at the moment.

I am a Floridian who knows nothing about the oil and gas royalty space. A family member talked me into investing into a royalty trust that has some near term litigation risk, Hugoton Royalty Trust (HGTXU). My initial $30k investment made in July has now appreciated to >$50k and the monthly royalties are obviously very attractive given the valuation.

There is going to be a judgement soon against the primary conveyance that I estimate will take 6-12 months to satisfy. This will reduce monthly royalty payments substantially. I am trying to understand the reserves to see if this is a long term hold or if I am better off taking the money and running.

I realize I don’t have a ton invested, but I hate being uneducated. Do you see value in retaining a consultant or is this something I can research on my own? I’ve read a number of the SEC filings but would like a 2nd opinion.

Thank you for taking the time to read my email. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Sean
