I’m extremely excited to welcome Tim Pawul with the Oil & Gas Council and the host of the Minerals & Royalties Podcast to our show.  His podcast features interviews with some of the leading CEOs & Investors in the minerals & royalties space with the ultimate purpose to educate investors on the space, thus equipping them with the knowledge base needed to become public investors, private investors, and end-buyers.

We’ve talked a lot on the show before about how mineral buyers underwrite deals and what their thoughts are on the market.  For example, one of our most popular episodes was our conversation with my good friend Will Cullen with Longpoint Minerals in Episode 45 of the Mineral Rights Podcast.  Will revealed a behind the scenes look at how companies evaluate mineral deals.

Tim is very tied in to the minerals & royalties market through his interactions with leaders of mineral companies both big and small.  This conversation was really interesting as Tim gives an overview of the conversations he’s having with these senior leaders and what they are thinking about the minerals market following the oil war and in a post-COVID world.  We talk about how buyers have changed the way the underwrite deals given all the uncertainties in the market, to the types of deals that are still closing and where Tim sees the biggest opportunities right now.

I was also honored to appear as a guest on an upcoming episode of the Minerals and Royalties Podcast. You can find it wherever you get your podcasts or on the Oil and Gas Council Website.

Outlook for Minerals and Royalties

We discuss some of the most interesting guests that have appeared on Tim’s show so far and some of the insights he has gleaned along the way.

Specifically:

  • How the Minerals & Royalties Podcast got started.
  • How he has seen the minerals & royalties space change over the past 5 years?
  • The types of buyers that are still doing deals?
  • Has there been an exodus in the market by the middle-man and some mineral brokers who were active up until last year?
  • The changes in strategy that he sees from mineral buyers, has there been a shift from the buy & flip to buy model to the buy & hold model in a post-covid world or have company strategies stayed the same?
  • The low commodity price environment usually presents buying opportunities. How is this downturn different than what happened in 2015 and are investors shifting where they transact?
  • We’ve read a lot in the news about consolidation in the industry and operators taking large write downs due to what many consider stranded reserves that may never get drilled. What is Tim hearing from mineral investors about the outlook for shale drilling?
  • What changes has he seen in the underwriting of mineral deals?
